Lawsuits involving industrial security often relate to physical security and access control, but frequently overlap into other areas, such as security guard negligence.

The number one cause of death in the workplace for females today is homicide and the risk of spillover domestic violence is increasing.  For this reason, in some states, businesses with inadequate access control are becoming more at risk and an increase in premises liability litigation involving industrial facilities is anticipated.

However, at present, in most venues when the plaintiff is an employee of the business, workers' compensation (as the sole remedy) protects the employer from further exposure when this defense is recognized.  Thus, typically, unless the plaintiff is a visitor, contractor or business invitee, litigation is directed against contract security services, installers and manufacturers of security countermeasure devices--or other third parties.

Mr. Schmedlen has extensive experience in all phases of industrial security and has conducted dozens of comprehensive security surveys and risk analyses at industrial, manufacturing, warehousing and trucking facilities.  Client companies have ranged in size from small operations employing less than 100 to those employing well over 1,000 workers.  These projects have been conducted in both domestic and foreign venues and the reports have often covered several hundred pages.  (Specific consulting projects of this nature are listed as an addendum to Mr. Schmedlen's curriculum vitae.)

One presentation on the general topic of industrial security was given by Mr. Schmedlen to the Michigan Trucking Association and this subject has been covered by him when he has lectured at local colleges.
