Many lawsuits relating to retail loss prevention or retail security are based on allegations of false detainment, excessive force or injuries suffered by uninvolved parties due to the actions of loss prevention or security personnel pursuing shoplifters or thieves. In other cases, litigation is based on allegations of inadequate security when shoppers are injured during a holdup or assaulted in parking lots where the level of protection is alleged to be substandard. A more recent class of litigation involves claims of racial profiling of minorities in retail environments and is covered under the Racial Profiling section of this Web site.
