Security surveys, security audits, risk analyses, risk assessments or vulnerability studies are projects which evaluate existing security, identify vulnerabilities, and provide recommendations for minimizing exposure to foreseeable risk in as cost effect a manner as possible. Roger Schmedlen, CPP, CFE, CII, MIPI, a professional security practitioner, has over 40 years experience in this field. He has conducted security surveys in a wide range of venues and industries which have offered varying degrees of risk. While most of his security surveys have been conducted in North America, he has also conducted security surveys in Latin America and overseas. All of Mr. Schmedlen's security survey projects are unique to the specific project and recommendations take into account any limitations dictated by the client. For instance, if a client's budget is limited, the security survey would be focused upon the most effective application of available funds. Likewise, if there is a prohibition on increasing security personnel, recommendations would be directed to alternative countermeasures. That is, countermeasures which cannot be instituted by the client for one reason or another are not considered, and other methods to minimize exposure are recommended. In many security surveys, additional expenditures have been unnecessary and vulnerabilities were significantly reduced by better utilization of existing resources. Based on recommendations in one security survey report, a $30,000 countermeasure previously approved by the client was found to be unnecessary when risk was reduced by the same level by procedural changes costing nothing. Generic check lists are not utilized during these projects and as noted, security surveys are all original works which apply exclusively to the clients' specific businesses and environments. Typically, security survey reports run from 75 - 400 pages and projects are completed within two months of commencement. In some cases, however, these projects are conducted in phases, such as when a project begins in the planning and design stages of facility construction or renovation--and ends when the facility is in full operation. Costs of comprehensive security surveys generally range from $5,000 - $40,000 in most venues of the U. S. A. and may run somewhat higher overseas. These projects are usually quoted on an all-inclusive flat rate basis. Security consulting is billing on an hourly basis, plus expenses. Travel time, however, is capped.
